Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital

Announces Significant Expansion Plans

LEXINGTON, KY –  Already documentably providing more rehabilitative care days than any other rehab facility in Kentucky, Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital announced at its official ground breaking ceremony, Tuesday, July 14, plans for a major, patient care-focused addition to the existing hospital. When completed, the three-story, 158,173 sq. ft. addition will bring the Hospital’s total bed capacity to 208: 114 will be private beds; 94 will be semi-private.

The commemorative event took place on site and included Board and staff members, current and former patients, and other invited guests - all of whom witnessed the traditional “shovel ceremony” and viewed detailed renderings of the project. As the project progresses, on-site work can be viewed, live, through a link on Cardinal Hill’s website: www.cardinalhill.org.

Kerry Gillihan, Cardinal Hill’s President and CEO, explained, “This expansion project is all about patient care. It’s about accommodating our patients in much better ways; it’s about creating more private rooms; it’s about making this facility even more effective. Fundamentally, ALL of this effort is driven by our commitment to our patients, their families, and to the superb staff here at Cardinal Hill.”

Gillihan added that the current facility, already at capacity, not only serves patients from Central, Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky, but also others from across the country, and occasionally special-case rehabilitative patients from outside the USA.

The new addition will connect directly to the east end of the existing facility, facing Versailles Road. General contractor for the expansion is, Lexington-based Burchfield & Thomas. The targeted completion date for the project is early 20ll.

Hill on Wheels Captures the 2010 Bluegrass Invitational Tournament

BGIT_008_opt[1].JPG

The 32nd Annual Bluegrass Invitational, held at the UK Seaton’s Center the weekend of February 5 – 7, was busting at the seams with a full slate of 20 teams.

In Division III, the number one ranked Moraine squeaked past a feisty Carolina Tarwheels team and then continued their advancement in the brackets by beating Cleveland by two points and Austin by eight. Austin had earlier hammered Hill on Wheels by 24 points. With three straight wins, Moraine was set to play in the Championship game from the winner’s bracket.

It was anticipated that the second team in the Division III Championship game would be a toss up between Austin and Cleveland, who had both lost to Moraine earlier by narrow margins. However, Hill on Wheels knocked off Music City and Cleveland in the loser’s bracket for a chance to meet Austin again in the semi-final game.

There a determined Hill on Wheels team was able to take their revenge on Austin with a 59 – 55 win which guaranteed their berth in the Championship game against Moraine. That was where Hill on Wheels pulled off the upset of the number one Moraine by a score of 54 – 47 marking the first time a Kentucky team had won the tournament in their home state.

Cardinal Hill Announces New Pain Institute
Lexington, KY--- Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital is proud to announce the opening of the Cardinal Hill Pain Institute with nationally renowned physician, William O. Witt, MD, as Medical Director.  The Cardinal Hill Pain Institute is located in the Lyman V. Ginger building on the Cardinal Hill campus at 2050 Versailles Road in Lexington.

Dr. Witt is a triple board certified physician specializing in the non-narcotic treatment of chronic pain.  In 1978, after suffering a spinal cord contusion in a skiing accident, Dr. Witt realized that there were limited options available at that time for dealing constructively with chronic pain. The University of Colorado, where Dr. Witt completed his training, had one of only a very few chronic pain treatment programs in the country at that time, and this training was the beginning of his career in the field of chronic pain management.

“Chronic pain can only be effectively treated in the long term with a comprehensive, rehabilitative approach much like other chronic conditions such as diabetes or asthma.  The Cardinal Hill Pain Institute provides additional opportunities to expand the options for those suffering with chronic debilitating pain,” said Dr. Witt.  “The Board and management team are absolutely thrilled to have Dr. Witt on our campus.  Bill’s reputation and innovative skills makes him an effective compliment to Cardinal Hill services, and I am delighted to have him on our team,” said Kerry Gillihan, President and CEO of Cardinal Hill Healthcare System.

Dr. Witt has practiced medicine in Kentucky for over 30 years.  Upon being appointed Chairman of Anesthesiology at the University of Kentucky in 1986, Dr. Witt developed the chronic, acute and cancer related pain services at the University of Kentucky, as well as the first accredited pain fellowship.  “Although I have had a wonderful 29-year career with UK, this new program at Cardinal Hill, which I am honored to direct, offers new options to our patients that have not been previously available.  The most successful approach to dealing with chronic pain is not to be found in a bottle of pills, but rather a comprehensive rehabilitative approach that will be dramatically advanced through the Cardinal Hill Pain Institute and the facilities available therein.”
